Nezi told Parliament during a debate on the President’s speech last week that hard working farmers were having to travel 75 km everyday to Harare to deliver produce to the market.
“Instead of farmers taking their produce to Harare, I would like to urge the government to have a bias in establishing tomato canning factories in our rural areas,” Nezi, a Zanu (PF) MP, said.
“We do have adequate infrastructure at Murehwa Growth Point and by so doing, we create employment and this would curb the rural urban migration by avoiding social challenges like accommodation.”
A canning factory could see Murehwa, which for years has supplied Harare with fresh vegetables and other produce, turning into a leading marketer of tomato paste, canned and frozen vegetable in Zimbabwe and beyond.
