The water situation remains dire, with residents having gone three months without access to clean water. A local health expert at Chinhoyi Provincial hospital told ***The Zimbabwean that that the continued water shortages had led to an outbreak of cholera in the town.
We have received some cases, but the top officials are playing it down so that media will not pick it up. The fact is that the top officials at the council have failed to deliver, said the health expert, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
When The Zimbabwean visited the town last week, desperate residents were queuing for clean water at a Red Cross centre while others had resorted to collecting water from unprotected sources such as wells and streams.
We appeal to NGOs to drill boreholes for us before we die of cholera. Things are not well and we have not received a clear response from the council. I think NGOs are our last hope, said Muchaneta Marumahoko from Mupata.
Efforts to get comment from town council officials were fruitless.
