STIs a cause for concern

MHONDORO-NGEZI - The high Sexually Transmitted Infection rate recorded in the area is a cause for concern, according to a local health expert.

A local medical practitioner at Zimplats Health Centre and Turf Central clinic said 100 cases were reported at the two health centres in the month of August. The medical practitioner attributed the increase to influx commercial sex workers and job seekers in the Mhondoro- Ngezi area.

“The number recorded is very worrisome and continues to increase drastically. As the mine continues to expand its operations, we are expecting an influx of people from different places who are coming to seek greener pastures,” he said.

A survey by this paper revealed that commercial sex workers have established an illegal settlement which offers cheap accommodation for desperate men.

Zimplats Medical Officer, Dr Edmond Berejena, said the company had embarked on a social responsibility programme to educate its workers and the community as part of their effort to mitigate the sexually transmitted diseases. “We have a social responsibility as a company to educate our workers and the community that we operate in about dangers of HIV and Aids. We have decided to engage the community urgently,” he said.
