Villagers demand by-election

electionHARARE - Nkayi South villagers are demanding a by-election as soon as possible so that the elected MP can access the constituency development fund set aside by the government for parliamentarians to develop their constituencies.

Last week the villagers held a meeting at Nkayi growth point and resolved to petition the two principals of the Global Political Agreement, President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai over the issue.

“It has taken a long time for the people of Nkayi South without an elected MP in our constituency. We want to be represented too. Right now we are not benefiting from the constituency development fund because we are not represented. We demand an elected MP,” reads part of the petition.

The meeting was attended by ward councillors and members of the community.

The villagers pointed out in the petition, according to the electoral act the elections were supposed to have been held three months after the dismissal of Abednigo Bhebhe, the former MP of the constituency who was expelled from the MDC led by Professor Arthur Mutambara for challenging the party’s leadership.
