Zanu (PF) officials bar Red Cross from village

MARONDERA-SVOSVE - Zanu (PF) officials, Ward 17 councilor Huni Mutizwa and party organizer, Faith Ngoma, last week barred Red Cross officials from assessing damage inflicted on MDC supporters by Zanu (PF) thugs during Copac outreach meetings.

Ngoma told the Red Cross team that no stranger was allowed in the village without prior approval of Zanu (PF). The Red Cross members had to contact the district administrator and Chief Svosve who confirmed their presence in the area was legitimate. Ngoma then told them that their visit was not worth the effort since Copac was carried out peacefully in the area. Later, the Red Cross was shocked to learn that some houses belonging to MDC-T supporters had been destroyed and property looted by Zanu (PF) youths after Copac meetings. MDC followers had expressed views not in keeping with Zanu (PF) expectations at Copac meetings, said one villager.

The oganisation promised to look into plight of affected villagers and assist where necessary, as the political temperature continued to rise among rural communities as Zanu (PF) desperately prepared itself for do or die elections scheduled for next year.
