CHIMANIMANI ZESA is to blame for deforestation and the subsequent environmental effects, members of the public here have said, calling on the power utility to take responsibility for the crisis.These calls were made in relation to the current nationwide awareness campaigns being conducted by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Management, which is meant to teach communities about the danger of cutting down trees.
However, members of the public who spoke to ***The Zimbabwean rejected the Francis Nhema-led campaign and urged the Zanu (PF) legislator to identify the true cause of excessive deforestation.
I see it improper for a minister to preach to us not to cut down trees yet fully aware that we need fire to cook and carry out other household activities since we are without electricity most of the time, said one local man. What our dear minister should do is to deal with the root cause, where this problem emanated from rather than wasting tax payers money in an already failed campaign.
The countrys beleaguered power utility owes up to US$400 million in debt to neighbouring countries.
