39% know their status

HARARE Only 39% of the entire adult population of Zimbabwe know their HIV status, Population Service International (PSI) has said.

About 39% of the adult population in Zimbabwe knows their HIV status. The country has about 14.23% of its adult population which is infected, with 56% of the infected being women, PSI said in its latest HIV and AIDS statement.

PSI said it had tested and counselled over 1.9 million people through the New Start network since 1999. Curtrently, it said, 59% of New Start clients are accessed through mobile outreach services targeting remote rural areas, isolated workplaces such as mines and commercial farms, prisons and peri-urban areas.

With co-funding from USAID and DFID, PSI has trained more than 2,500 hair dressers and barbers to conduct discussions about safe sex and the necessity of getting tested.
