Chihuri resists POSA amendment

chihuriHARARE Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri (Pictured) is reportedly resisting the amendment of Public Order and Security Act (POSA) which is used by the police to bar rallies organized by opposition parties in the country.

MDC-T chief whip Innocent Gonese said the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) was vehemently resisting the revision of the Act whose action would render them powerless over authorizing political gatherings.

Gonese said in an interview that the police force was the main stumbling block in the move to amend the act because they fear the reduction of their power. The MDC chief whip, however, said there was a general understanding among all the political parties in the house of Assembly over the amendment of POSA.
