Mayor and councillor hit back at threats

farai_nyandoroMARONDERA - Maronderas MDC (T) mayor, Farai Nyandoro (pictured), and Ward 7 councillor, Dominic Matangira, have said they will defend themselves, after reports that they were on a Zanu (PF) hit-list.

Its claimed that Zanu resolved to silence the two MDC councillors at a recent party congress held at Kushinga Phikelela.

Though we would not provoke and attack Zanu (PF) and any other agents of terror, we will put up a good fight in self defence if violence is brought to our doorsteps, Nyandoro and Matangira told party supporters at a rally last Saturday.

This time around, Zanu (PF) and other terrorists should not take us for granted as we are fully prepared to defend ourselves when attacked.

Nyandoro is a survivor of several suspected assassination attempts at the hands of both Zanu (PF) and state security agents. In June 2008, he narrowly escaped a CIO kidnap attempt in the town centre. The MDC-T Marondera district chairperson, Portifa Bakayimana, was kidnapped in the swoop by CIO operatives led by the late Sydney Nhlomayi. He remains unaccounted for an is believed to have been murdered.

Zanu (PF) militia later missed Nyandoros house in Cherutombo and petrol-bombed a homestead next door.

Ever since Nyandoro became town mayor, suspected CIO agents have been watching his activities, driving to his farm and making enquiries about him locally.
