African Beauty in all its states is a competition jointly organised by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Delegation of European Union (EU) to the AU. The photo contest to showcase African beauty is part of the European Union contribution to the theme of the upcoming Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU, which is: “Towards Greater Unity and Integration through Shared Values”.
The competition is aimed at portraying all aspects of African beauty. Beauty is perceived as a shared value. The photos should as far as possible, provide an original angle to demonstrate an ability to create meaning, and illustrate beauty in a modern Africa.
The competition will be evaluated by a jury made of African and European Experts in the domain of photography, including the eminent renowned African photographer, Malik Sidibe. The judges are looking for photographs that can provide an original angle and demonstrate an ability to create meaning, while illustrating African beauty.
Five finalists will be selected, one from each of the five regions of Africa North, South, East, West and Central. There will also be an overall grand prize winner selected from the regional finalists.
One overall winner will be awarded photographic equipment worth 3000 euros and 1000 euros for the second prize winners. All winners will be invited to participate in a photographic workshop jointly organised by AU and EU at the AUC Headquarter, Addis Ababa, at the end of January 2011.
The winning photos will also be displayed at an exhibition during the 16th AU Summit.
