Unicef set to introduce friendly schools for Albinos

MUTARE- UNICEF will soon partner with Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture to introduce child friendly schools for albinos in the country.

Manicaland deputy provincial education director, Andrew Chigumira told The Zimbabwean On Sunday last week that the ministry had taken great strides towards empowering and creating a safe learning environment for children with albinism.

He said the government had partnered with UNICEF in a programme that will see children with albinism receiving free basic textbooks, stationery and other relevant learning material in both secondary and primary schools.

There will be a special training for teachers who have students with albinism at their schools so that the schools become child friendly to such children, he said.

Chigumira said the objective of creating such facility was to reinforce confidence building in albinos in various communities since they were prone to abuses and at times tended to alienate themselves. He said albinism was not a disability but a condition which only affected the skin and the eyes.

Many albino`s in Africa suffer abuse including segregation and persecution.
