Williams blow for Zimbabwe

cricket_gameHARARE - Zimbabwe suffered a major blow this week ahead of the tour of Bangladesh after key batsman, Sean Williams, was withdrawn from the squad.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said the 24-year-old had been left out from the upcoming tour after sustaining a hamstring injury. Williams strained his right hamstring tendon during practice with franchise side Matabeleland Tuskers in Zimbabwe’s domestic Twenty20 championship.

ZC said from Harare Regis Chakabva had replaced the batsman. Chakabva, a year Williams junior, is one of the least experienced players on the 15-man squad.

The wicketkeeper-cum-batsman has played just one One-Day International for Zimbabwe, a cap which came against Kenya in 2008.

Zimbabwe will later this month play Asian rivals Bangladesh in a series of One Day Internationals in preparation for the International Cricket Council 2011 World Cup scheduled for February. Zimbabwe is in a relatively tough group in the ICCs flagship event.

They are pooled alongside defending champions Australia, high-flying New Zealand, co-hosts Sri Lanka and Canada. Their trickiest match is the opening one against Australia at the Mahindra Rajapaska International Cricket Stadium in Hambantonta, Sri Lanka on February 20.
