Last week Zanu (PF) youths were seen in parts of the town taking note of the names of people in every household and their national registration document numbers. Many people submitted their names out of fear of what would happen if they didnt.
Leaders of the groups said that they were collecting people’s names in order to form Soviet Union style cell groups.
“We are now preparing for elections and we want people to join our party. We are therefore taking names of people so that we can visit them and invite them to our meetings,” said a Zanu (PF) official. Past experiences have proven that those who refuse to attend the meetings become targets of Zanu (PF)s wrath. “We are obviously concerned by what Zanu PF members are doing. They want to force us to join them. And I am sure that they will hunt down people who dont attend their meetings as is the case with flea markets,” said an MDC activist, Richard Ndou.
Zanu (PF) has control of flea markets in the populous town and people who have stalls are forced to be members of Zanu (PF) with those who do not belong to the former ruling party being banned from doing business at the flea markets.
