MARONDERA - MDC-T Member of Parliament for Marondera Central, Iain Kay Kay was visiting his constituency to donate a wheelchair to a disabled member of the community when Zanu (PF) thugs led by Garikayi Nyamakambo approached him.
A dreadlocked and scruffy looking Zanu thug approached the popular MDC-T legislator and asked for a dollar to buy beer. Kay told the thug that he did not have the requested cash and this angered Garikayi who was drinking beer nearby. Garikayi who is known for rowdy and politically motivated criminal activities in the suburb, approached Kay and shouted unprintable vulgar words at the Member of Parliament, said an eye witness.
Onlookers who appreciated Kays invaluable service to the community charged at Garikayi and his colleagues in a bid to beat them up. They were restrained by residents who described him as a wayward lunatic beyond reform, said the eye witness.
The man is a member of a Zanu (PF) pocket of thugs reportedly disowned by Mugabes party for perpetrating violence at remaining white owned farms and was venting its anger on the MDC. The group was left idle after being dismissed from council employment for misconduct. The thugs are loyal to former Zanu (PF) governor, Aenius Chigwedere, and allegedly enjoy police protection when they commit crimes against MDC.
We feel highly provoked by Garikayis behaviour towards our caring leader. Kay provided a power transformer for Rujeko Suburb when the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) failed to provide one. He regularly distributes food rations, farm inputs and wheelchairs to the needy. Recently he assisted the supply of water pumps for the local municipality. Garikayi and colleagues should be stopped now, said a senior resident.
