Zim defender fails SA trials

JOHANNESBURG Zimbabwean defender, Lincoln Zvasiya, last week failed to make the grade in South Africa s ABSA Premiership, where he was trying out for three-time champions, SuperSport United.

United are desperately searching for a defender who will replace their captain and Bafana Bafana defender, Bongani Khumalo, who is set to join Tottenham Hotspurs in the Barclays Premiership early next year and Zvasiya was one of those in their radar.

However, Uniteds coach, Gavin Hunt, last week told The Zimbabwean On Sunday that the 20-year-old Zimbabwean, who came through with Aces Youth Soccer Academy and is currently with Monomotapa, had failed to make the grade.

“I can confirm that we had him on trials and although he is a promising lad, he failed to make the grade that we were looking for, said Hunt last Thursday.

We had him and two other foreign players, both defenders, here on trial for a number of days but they have all returned because they did not have what we are looking for.

We will not rush things but are confident that we will soon find the player we are looking for.”?Hunt said that his club would continue searching outside the South African shores for a reasonably-priced defender, dismissing speculation that his club would sign Platinum Stars experienced Mbulelo Mabizela.

Local players are very expensive, so we will continue to look outside our borders for possible signings, added Hunt, who said that the door would be open for Zvasiya should he improve on his game.

Zvasiya has played for the Zimbabwe Under-17 and Under-20 teams and has been touted to mature into the senior Warriors set-up in a short period of time.

Other players rejected alongside him are Brazilian Ramon Villela Gonalves and Oumar Kond from Switzerland who were on trial with the club last week.
