ZUJ reps seek support in UK

LONDON - Representatives from the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) are in the UK to ask for support as their members face increased harassment from government agents.

Foster Dongozi, ZUJ General Secretary and colleague Jennifer Dube are due to speak to the National Union of Journalists and Members of Parlaiment about the intimidation their members face in the run up to the next election.

Commenting on the recent persecution of Zimbabwean journalists by the state, Dongozi said: “Things are very difficult at the moment, in fact the authorities are upping the anti in terms of intimidating journalists.

“One of our members is in prison as we speak. An editor is on the run. A journalist who works for a Zanu (PF) newspaper is also facing criminal charges so it shows that anyone can be targeted and hounded.

“We are very concerned that this violence towards our members will increase in the run up to the elections and the constitutional referendum. Attempts to intimidate journalists have not totally silenced us, but people are reluctant to speak out.”

Dongozi said he would be asking UK unions to show their solidarity with the ZUJ. The Nowergian Union of Journalists (NJ) have already written a letter of protest to the unity government calling for an end to the harassment of journalists and noting its deep concern for the safety of reporters working in Zimbabwe.
