Greed drives socio-economic crisis

Our country Zimbabwe is rich, endowed with mineral resources, a favourable climate and a well-educated population. And yet, in a decade, Zimbabwe has fallen down the ladder of economic prosperity and is very close to the bottom of the ladder.

This state of affairs is clearly as a result of a failure of leadership. Instead of putting the interests of Zimbabweans first, politicians are selfishly focusing on personal interest. The primary driver of the crisis in Zimbabwe and the consequent misery and suffering of the people is greed on the part of those in authority. For instance, the stupendous wealth of senior Zanu (PF) official, Ignatius Chombo, revealed as a result of an acrimonious divorce, exposes the shocking economic disparities, and the loot and plunder in Zimbabwe today.

The massive corruption and opacity of deals around Marange diamonds is another case in point. Marange villagers are chased off their lands empty-handed to make way for select individuals to plunder a national resource. Greed has so consumed those in authority that they have ceased to care about anything except their excessive desire to

accumulate wealth which they neither need nor deserve.

Political power, for them, is the vehicle through which they can satisfy their greed, and therefore, they would be prepared to shed blood to acquire and retain that political power. In their twisted sense of logic, they are therefore justified in unleashing waves of electoral violence and coerce people to ‘vote’ them into political power, or to use other fraudulent means to attain and retain political office.

Understanding that greed is the primary driver of the Zimbabwean crisis would lead to a better understanding of the paradoxical situation of Zimbabwe that, in the midst of all this suffering, you find multi-millionaires in United States Dollar terms, on the streets of Harare.

Only a few people are amassing wealth at the expense of the suffering masses of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has enough resources to support all those who live in it, and also to support the region, but a few politically connected and greedy people are busy plundering Zimbabwe and eating everyone’s share. Enough is Enough! Zimbabwe’s nationalist revolution must be rescued from its current capture by a few fat cats.

It is the sacred duty of every political leader to ensure, first and foremost, the security and development of their citizens. Zimbabwe desperately needs political leaders with integrity, who deeply care for their people, and have the ability to self-transcend. Political leaders are judged not on the basis of the political party they belong to, but on content of their character and their service to humanity.

If only Zimbabwe had a caring leadership, we would not be in this perpetual crisis. There is want of able political leadership. Feedback: coordinator@crisiszimbabwe.org
