MDC-T District Organising Secretary for Uzumba, Edna Muswe, said that trouble started last week in Dumbura village after the village headman Sabhuku Dumbura took names of the people who had radios to the Zanu (PF) District offices.
Our people have lost their radios after Zanu (PF) leadership at the meeting who included Shepherd Mashonganyika and John Lobengula said that they surrender the radios. The two have dispatched Zanu (PF) youths to take radio stations, said Muswe.
Zanu (PF) has been on a media crackdown since the talk of another election started. The former ruling party accuses the independent media of being responsible for its waning fortunes. Despite its monopoly ZBC does not have radio or television signal in most rural areas and in places like Plumtree in Matabeleland Province, Zimbabweans listen to Botswana stations while in areas like Beitbridge people listen to South African radio stations.
Scores of supporters have taken the case to the police just for the record. The radios have been our only source of news and now our people will be left with no news at all, said Muswe.
