MDC raises alarm over food aid

Army forces villagers to buy Zanu (PF) party cards
food_aid3HARARE -Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC has raised the alarm over the politicisation of food aid ahead of elections next year. The party accuses President Robert Mugabe's Zanu (PF) of using relief aid to mobilize support for itself at the expense of MDC supporters.

The politicization of food aid in Zimbabwe operates crudely in the open. Members and supporters of Zanu (PF) and their families are given top priority. The MDC reported last week that Zanu (PF) members in most parts of rural Mashonaland have already hijacked the food aid programme and are giving the donations only to those card-carrying Zanu (PF) supporters.

In Muzarabani North district, Mashonaland East province, food aid donated by the World Vision, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), is being distributed through the councillors and headmen, who have formed food committees with known Zanu (PF) people. “As a result MDC supporters and most vulnerable people are being excluded,” the MDC said in a statement. Another NGO, Christian Care, is said to be giving food distribution in Uzumba. But this has been seized by a Zanu (PF) councillor, only identified as Manguwo who is excluding MDC families, the party said.

In the same districts, reports received show that government seed is being sold at subsidized prices, but known MDC activists and supporters are being excluded. Relief aid is dangled in front of MDC members, who are forced to make the choice of going hungry or joining Zanu (PF). Those who speak out against such practices are targeted for persecution, intimidation and harassment. In Mbire district, Mashonaland Central province, members of the Zimbabwe National Army are moving around in the area forcing people to purchase Zanu (PF) membership cards for US$1.00, says the MDC.

They threaten that anyone found without one will be severely beaten up. The soldiers have set up base at the Lower Guruve Development Association offices. In Mt Darwin, chiefs are reportedly selling Zanu (PF) membership cards for US$2.00. The army requested written questions and declined to comment on the phone. The MDC says it has raised this issue repeatedly with the Western diplomatic corps in Harare.
