Union to help push Zim democracy

JOHANNESBURG -- South Africas National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) has pledged to work with other civil society organisations for the restoration of democracy in Zimbabwe and other countries under autocratic rule.

In a statement issued after a meeting of the unions central executive committee last week, Nehawu spokesman Sizwe Pamla, listed Zimbabwe among several unstable countries in the world where the union would be involved in efforts to bring peace and democracy.

Internationally, we will continue to work with progressive formations in solidarity with the people of Palestine, Zimbabwe and Swaziland for their national liberation and will step up our solidarity work in Cuba, Myanmar, including the Western Sahara, he said in Johannesburg.

We will continue to build and strengthen relationships with the trade union movement in the continent and to continue fighting against the blockade and the release of the Cuban Five. We commit to work with other unions in building the World Federation of Trade Unions on the African continent, beginning at home and in our sub-region.

Nehawu is a member of the influential Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), a stern critic of President Robert Mugabes controversial rule.

Cosatu has previously clashed with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) over its handling of the Zimbabwean crisis, calling on the ANC to adopt a tougher approach towards Harare instead of the so-called policy of quiet diplomacy under which Pretoria has refrained from publicly criticising Mugabe.

The labour body accuses Mugabe of human rights violations and ruining the economy much to the detriment of Zimbabweans, an estimated three million of who have fled to South Africa.
