144 poachers arrested

poached_rhino_zimbabweBULAWAYO - Poachers last week shot and dehorned a male black rhino at Matopos National Park in Matabeleland South.
Sources at the national park told The Zimbabwean that the carcass of the rhino was discovered by two game rangers on patrol in the White Waters area.

The animal had a gunshot wound on the neck and its horns were missing. The rangers found six cartridges of an AK rifle at the scene, said one ranger.

Poaching of species such as rhino and elephants has been on the increase since the advent of the chaotic land resettlement programme.

According to the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, at least 144 poachers were last year arrested while 31 rifles, 226 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.

Among the poachers were 125 Zimbabweans, seven Zambians, three Congolese, three South Africans and six Batswana.
