Councillor Kavunika’s death becomes the second time since the March 2008 Harmonised Elections that Harare residents have lost their elected representatives.
The first to die was Ward 11 Councillor Christopher Tigere who passed on in a car accident in Murewa.
Councillor Kavunika, the Chairperson of the Finance and Development Committee of the City of Harare, was regularly engaging the citizens of Harare through the Committee, which on 30 November 2010 presented the 2011 City Budget.
Her untimely death robs the citizenry of an elected representative, at a time Central Government, through the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development has fired four elected councillors in Harare for alleged acts of misconduct and corruption. This leaves the citizens highly under-represented.
Councillor Kavunika will be greatly missed. Our deepest condolences go to her two children, relatives, fellow councillors of the City of Harare, and His Worship, the Mayor of Harare Muchadeyi Masunda, the MDC-T and the residents of Ward 2.
May her soul rest in peace
