According to party sources in the area, six beasts and seven goats were slaughtered during the party’s “traditional cleansing ceremony” which
was held a few days after the party’s “people’s congress” in Mutare in December. Several drums of traditional beer were also brewed during the ceremony which was attended by several senior Zanu (PF) Manicaland provincial leaders, including provincial women’s league boss, Jane Knight, who is also aspiring to be an MP.
Joshua Sako, the party ‘s national secretary for external Affairs in the youth wing who also reside in the area attended as well the all night vigil which was punctuated with revolutionary and anti-MDC songs. Villagers were forced to donate cash and rapoko for the buying of the beasts and brewing of the traditional beer. “Zanu (PF) has been losing this constituency to members of the opposition such as Roy Bennett because our ancestors are not happy with certain traditional issues. A lot of spirit mediums have approached us pointing out issues which the party should do for it to claim the constituency from the white people,” said James Ndikiyana, a local headman in the area who is a member of Zanu (PF).
Lynette Karenyi of the MDC -T is currently the incumbent Member of Parliament for the area. She took over from Bennett whose parliamentary term was abruptly cut off in 2005 after he was jailed for flooring Zanu (PF)’s Patrick Chinamasa in Parliament.
