Drug shortages cripple clinics

BEZELBRIDGE - A number of clinics and hospitals in Manicaland province are facing a critical shortage of drugs and equipment as the inclusive government battles to resuscitate the collapsed health sector.

Non Governmental Organisations (NGO)s have moved in to fill the void by supplying medical drugs to hundreds of cash strapped villagers in various districts. Villagers and community leaders confirmed to ***The Zimbabwean that a number of clinics did not have adequate supply of drugs and equipment.

We really thank NGOs for their help because without them people could have been dying from curable ailments. Their service in these times of hardships is greatly appreciated, said headman Maridzakohwa of Maridzakohwa village. Moses Mushawatu, a local councillor in Burma Valley, said they were working well with a number of NGOs and appealed to them to continue providing assistance to poor villagers.

A representative of one of NGOs assisting villagers, Plan Zimbabwe, said they were saddened that villagers continued to die of curable ailment such as malaria.

Plan Zimbabwe has so far donated mosquito nets to villagers in Bezel Bridge and also engaged in technical support and training spray operators. We have also sprayed a number of households in the district to fight malaria that has the highest fatality rate in the province, said an official.
