Mnangagwas blackmail attempt deplorable

emmerson_mnangagwa2We read with shocked disbelief the announcement by the Minister of Defence Emmerson Mnangagwa (pictured) that the heads of foreign-owned companies are to be forced to denounce targeted measures against Zanu (PF) leaders.

This is nothing but blackmail of the worst kind. We also see it as a crude attempt by the Zanu (PF) thievocracy to wrestle the control of these companies away from their rightful owners without having to pay for them.

Zanu (PF) has an insatiable appetite for grabbing anything that makes money. One only needs to consider a list of Zimbabwean millionaires who flaunt their eye-watering wealth in the midst of the suffering of millions of their countrymen and women. They are mostly Zanu (PF) bigwigs.

Unfortunately, Zanu (PF)s track record of running companies is not good. Everything they have touched in the past has turned to dust, sooner or later.

Take the parastatals for example, which have been milked dry, or the once prosperous and productive commercial farms now lying idle, while the majority of people in our nation are forced to survive on handouts from the West. We all know who is responsible for that.

Even Zanu (PF)s own companies are all struggling for survival as nepotism, political patronage, poor management and corruption take their toll. The once-prosperous empire of Mutumwa Mawere, which was nationalised, have all gone bust in the hands of incompetent Zanu (PF) functionaries.

No company should be forced to declare allegiance to politicians. It is wrong. Potential foreign investors will be watching this new development. If you add the indigenisation laws and rampant corruption to the mix, it makes our country a bad investment destination.

The Zimbabwe Investment Authority can publish all the fancy brochures it likes, with amazing (if inaccurate) statistics about mineral wealth, coupled with high-sounding policy promises (which the authorities have no intention of honouring). Investors will not be fooled and neither will Zimbabweans.
