Mutare deputy Mayor granted bail

George Jerrison, the Mutare deputy Mayor was granted a US$50 bail at the Mutare Magistrates Court on charges of holding an illegal residents feedback meeting in Sakubva on Tuesday. He was remanded to 9 February. Yesterday, Marondera Mayor, Farai Nyandoro and Councillor Carlos Madzongwe were each given a US$100 bail by a Marondera magistrate on false charges of assaulting a Zanu PF supporter on 9 January.

Meanwhile, Steven Muderere, the councillor for Ward 12 in Chivi Central, Masvingo was on Saturday denied access to agricultural inputs by Zanu PF Chivi District Coordinating Committee members for being an MDC member. The inputs were being accessed through the state run Grain Marketing Board (GMB).

President Morgan Tsvangirai on Tuesday hosted a reception for senior MDC officials and staff at his Strathaven home, marking his return to office after his annual leave. An upbeat President Tsvangirai, flanked by his deputy, Hon. Thokozani Khupe, urged Zimbabweans to stay on the course for democratic change, saying 2011 was the watershed for real change and holistic transformation.

The MDC membership cards have proved to be popular across the country with some provinces running out of their allocations as demand is picking up, reinforcing the position of the MDC as a peoples Party of Excellence. The new card, which was launched by President Morgan Tsvangirai in Harare last August under the theme Your master card to real change, has shown a steady and impressive increase in sales volumes across the country.

In Bulawayo, Matabeleland South and Midlands provinces, MDC officials there have requested for more cards as they have run out of their allocations. In other provinces, the demand and sale of the cards continues on an upward spiral.
