No toilets in schools

toiletMUREWA There are no toilet facilities at Zhakata Primary School in Murewa, it has been revealed, and children have been forced to relieve themselves outside.

Last week 120 children were treated for bilharzias and health officials threatened to shut down the school.

The problem at the school is being caused by the toilets which are no longer suitable for little children. We are afraid of a cholera outbreak that may force the school to shutdown, said the Headmaster, Mhosira.

A parent in the School Development Committee said that the Ministry of Education had given the school an ultimatum to built new toilets or face closure.

We do not know what will happen to our children if the school is to be shut down. We have talked to our MP who has promised to help. As parents we have already dug the holes, however, progress has been stalled by the heavy rains, said Abel Chitsa.

Mhosira hopes to construct new toilets as quickly as possible.

We would like to have 20 squatting holes before the end of the term, otherwise the school will be closed by health officials, or worse still, children will contract diseases, he said.

MP for the area, Ward Nezi, said he was going to use part of the Constitutional Development Fund (CDF) to build new toilets.

I am aware of the state of toilets at Zhakata Primary School and will use the CDF to build new toilets. We should creating safe learning environments for our children, said Nezi.
