SADC road map to elections must also reform service chiefs Vhilela

size_vhelelaMARONDERA - To create a free and fair environment for Zimbabwes next polls, the proposed SADC road map to the elections must also reform Service Chiefs as they are custodians of orders issued to soldiers, police and other state security agents accused of reining terror against suspected rivals of President Robert Mugabe.

MDC-T Marondera Urban District Youth Chairperson, Size Vhilela, told delegates at a meeting convened at Dombotombo Hall recently by a non-governmental organization, Center for Community Development Zimbabwe (CCDZ), that individuals in charge of state security agents should be turned professional if ever elections in the country were to be free and fair.

Service Chiefs must be reformed to carry out their official duties in a non-partisan manner. This would help eliminate political violence blamed on state security agents and members of the uniformed forces. Something urgent should be done to ensure the service chiefs discharge their duties in the interest of all citizens across the political divide, said Vhilela.

At a separate event, in his end of year message to party youths, Vhilela said Zanu (PF) was abusing the history of the liberation struggle to destroy future of the country.

Zanu (PF) has nothing new to offer the country except making senseless noises about its past achievements. People do not feed on history of a decayed party. The country needs hope and a prosperous way forward which can only be provided by Morgan Tsvangirai and MDC. The electorate invested its trust and hope for a brighter future in MDC as reflected in March 29, 2008 elections. What is left of Zanu (PF) is a structured model of a dead dinosaur made of mashed paper. Zanu (PF) is lifeless, dead and buried, said Vhilela.

He said Mugabe and his party decampaigned themselves through skewed political policies, corruption, cruelty to the people and dictatorial tendencies among other evil tendencies. The 1980s Matabeleland massacres, Operation Murambatsvina, the bloody and chaotic land reform, politically motivated terror campaigns stretching from 1980 to date and continued massive looting of natural resources by Zanu (PF), helped destroy the former liberation party.

Vhilela called on people not to be scared of threats made by Zanu (PF) that they would not surrender power to political rivals who win next elections. He said such threats were characteristic of political losers. Zanu (PF) is a tormented demon whose political survival depends on a few armed members of the defense forces. MDCs might is entrenched in the people. No one takes Zanu (PF) seriously anymore, Vhilela said.

Silence on the part of MDC in the face of threats and insults from Zanu (PF), should not be misinterpreted as a sign of fear or cowardice. The MDC is a principled, dignified and practical party which believes in service delivery not making meaningless noises like Zanu (PF). Zanu (PF) is panicking as it realized people had cast their vote in stone on Tsvangirais presidential candidature.

Since its formation, MDC has weathered endless threats from Zanu (PF) and there is nothing new to fear from recycled Zanu (PF) terror campaigns. People were either killed or maimed, property destroyed while their livelihoods were taken away by known Zanu (PF) thugs, but the electorate still rallied behind MDC. Vhilela said MDC would not take Zanu (PF) violence lying down as people were prepared to stage mass protests in defense of their right to freedom of choice and association.
