Safari Lodge invaded

HARARE - Scores of Zanu (PF) members have raided Kuimba Shiri Safari Lodge owned by Gary Stafford, demanding that he leave the premises.

The group of self-styled warvets and youths besieged Stafford and forced entrance into the sanctuary, causing panic.

So tense was the situation that this reporter was threatened by another group that had besieged the road leading to the bird sanctuary.

They were welding machetes, knob berries and catapults was singing revolutionary songs and travelling in pick up trucks.

A bird handler at the sanctuary, who identified himself as Thomas, confirmed that the owner of the sanctuary had fled the premises after being forced to leave immediately.

He had to run away as the war veterans had threatened to kill him if he failed to leave. They even started looting some belongings and the situation is still tense, he said. Kuimbab Shiri is a bird sanctuary situated at Lake Chibero and is a lucrative tourist resort that offers bird viewing and gaming.
