Undies draped on umpire’s finger

dickie_bird__statueA legendary cricket umpire is demanding action - to stop youngsters hanging bras and knickers from his statue.

The bronze statue of Dickie Bird – showing him with his right finger raised – was put up in his honour in his home town of Barnsley.

But it was become a target for local revellers who have hung bras, knickers and even pizzas from the finger while they pose for photos.

Mr Bird, 77, is to meet the local council to ask them to raise the plinth a few feet to solve the problem. The 6ft statue was erected in honour of the Yorkshireman, who umpired 66 Test matches, in 2009. There was one recent addition to the statue, he probably didn’t mind – a cricket fan’s sign bragging: “We won the Ashes”
