Villagers resist MP

NKAYI Villagers here have resisted attempts by Zanu (PF) to unconstitutionally impose party activist and special councillor, Angelina Ndlovu, as Member of Parliament for the area, following the dismissal of the legitimate and former MP, Abendego Bhebhe from MDC-M in 2009.

Zanu (PF) officials, including the Matabeleland North governor, Thokozile Mathuthu have been introducing Ndlovu at meetings as MP for the area, despite the fact that she was never voted into the post by the people of Nkayi.

“Last week we were shocked to hear Ndlovu being introduced as our MP during a farming implements distribution function in Zinyangeni area. During the meeting we were told that “MP” Ndlovu and Mveliswa Ncube, a village head were going to distribute the seed maize to Zanu (PF) supporters only” said James Mbambo, an MDC activist in the area. Mbambo said that following the announcement, the villagers walked out of the meeting in protest.

Zanu (PF) has not won a seat in the area since the advent of the MDC in 1999. Bhebehe always won the seat and many view the seed distribution saga as a way of luring votes by the former ruling party ahead of a possible election this year. In the 2008 election Bhebhe polled 3 532 votes against Zanu (PF) Tshata Mguni’s 3 198 votes.
