War vets invade Nyanga cottages, lodges

war_vets_freeNYANGA - Overzealous Zanu (PF) self-styled war veterans have targeted white-owned businesses in Nyanga.

This follows reports that a group of thugs led by Natsai Bukuta, a female war veteran, recently embarked on a looting spree of several the white-owned properties.

Nyanga South Member of Parliament, Willard Chimbetete, this week confirmed that white-owned tourist lodges and cottages were invaded by the so-called war vets,who looted property valued to millions of United States dollars.

Ssenior Zanu (PF) officials and police and central intelligence officers aligned to President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu (PF) party are reported to have been seizing white-owned lodges, cottages and other tourism facilities.

Lodges and cottages in this tourist district have been the main targets. Some of the invaded lodges are owned by foreigners. I have informed the police about the deteriorating situation, said Chimbetete.

The MP added that the prowling intruders invaded Cheshire and Darwood cottages last week.

Owners and staff from these cottages were threatened and their keys confiscated. They were ordered to vacate their properties. Some of the cottages were hosting tourists who were enjoying the festive season when the group made the threats.

The looters took away various property and loaded it in their trucks living the tourists in shock, said Chimbetete.

Manicaland police spokesman, Inspector Brian Makomeke, confirmed the reports although he could neither confirm nor deny that arrests had been made.
