Youth push UNSC to action

SOWETO The Zimbabwe Youth Wing Movement has intensified its pressure on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take serious action on perpetrators of political violence.

The political organisation was formed by Zimbabwean youths who were victims of political violence in 2008 and fled to South Africa. The organisations information officer, Brian Mudzerenga, said they were making a follow-up to the petition they forwarded to the UNSC demanding the arrest of perpetrators of political violence.

What we are demanding is the restoration of rule of law in the country firstly, and we want all the perpetrators of political violence to be named. I does not matter whether they are prosecuted or not, we just want them to be named and shamed by the International court of justice so that there will not be a repeat of the chaos which we witnessed over the past decade, he told Radio VOP in Soweto at the weekend.

The organisation on 13 December 2010 handed a petition to the UN Security Councils Pretoria offices demanding the prosecution of perpetrators of political violence.

Mudzerenga said SADC had failed to solve the Zimbabwean Crisis hence their appeal to the UN.

These perpetrators of political violence are known and they have not been arrested despite efforts by human rights organisations in Zimbabwe to get them held accountable and this is a very sad situation, he added.
