Businesses hit by fake bills

Counterfeit US$50 notes have been circulating in Zimbabwes business sector, forcing one of the countrys largest financial institutions to raise the red flag this week.

The fake notes, which easily pass through ultra-violet machines, have been circulating in Harare for the past month. This has forced Interfin Bank to issue a statement to its clients cautioning them to exercise greater vigilance when accepting US$50 banknotes.

According to the bank, the fake notes have been produced using an original US$5 note.

The note is genuine and therefore will pass through the UV light or fake note detector pen. However, the difference is that the original US$50 has the face of GRANT whereas the US$5 note has the face of LINCOLN, the bank said in a statement.
