Citrus orchard burnt by thugs

BEITBRIDGE - A prominent citrus farmer and orange juice exporter, Ronald Murray, last week lost more than 47 000 orange trees after suspected war veterans and Zanu (PF) thugs set fire to his estate.

A group of thugs led by a war veteran identified as Jimmy Muleya tried to invade Murrays farm but backtracked after the local community strongly resisted them.

Part of Murrays citrus orchard was burnt. We suspect the fire was started by a group of disgruntled war veterans and Zanu (PF) supporters whose attempts to invade the estate were foiled last week by locals, said one worker.

Production of orange concentrate has now been suspended.
