In a statement last Thursday the unions central executive committee also congratulated the people of Tunisia and Egypt on their victory over the repressive regimes of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak respectively. It said: The central executive committee congratulated the people of Tunisia and Egypt on their victories for democracy and human rights, which are an inspiration to workers and the poor all over the world.

We send our solidarity to the people who are struggling in Yemen, Bahrain and elsewhere and condemn the brutal killing of protesters in Libya and the arrests of our comrades in Zimbabwe, including the ZCTU (Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union) president Lovemore Matombo.

The COSATU, which is part of South Africas ruling tripartite led by President Jacob Zumas ANC party and the South African Communist Party, has taken a tough stance against President Robert Mugabe and has often led demonstrations at the Zimbabwean embassy in South Africa to protest against Mugabes rule.
