Eight University of Zimbabwe students appear in court

Eight University of Zimbabwe (UZ) student activists appeared before a Harare magistrate this morning. The eight Joshua Chinyere, James Katso, Temptation Tazviinga, Tinashe Hlathswayo, Tinashe Chisaira, Culvern Mungiri, Sydney Chisuko, and Chikomborero Mukwaturi are facing charges of participating in an illegal gathering following a ZINASU demonstration in March 2010 at Parliament Building against the abuse of human rights in the country.

In October 2010 at the close of the state case, the students defense lawyer Jeremiah Bamu of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) applied for discharge. The state prosecutor is yet to file his submission in response to the application. Judgment on the application for discharge will be delivered on 18 February 2011.

The Student Solidarity Trust (SST) believes that judicial reforms are the only panacea to the current backlog that has jammed our courts. Students should not spend most of their time in courts but colleges and Universities.
