Zanu PF youths armed with logs and stones have barricaded the road to the police station and are barring people from getting to the station to give the 12 members food. This is happening in full view of the police.

Civil society organisations have added their voice to the call by the MDC for an end to politically motivated violence being perpetrated by Zanu PF militias in some parts of the country. In a joint statement on escalating violence, increasing instability, targeted victimisation of civil society leaders, the media and ordinary citizens, the civil society group strongly condemned the resurgence of politically motivated violence by Zanu PF and some State security agents. The group condemned the arrests of MDC supporters on trumped up charges by the police.

Irene Petras, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) director said in the past 12 days her organisation had dealt with over 30 cases of arrests of mainly MDC activists across the country. The petition was signed by 54 civil society organisations.

They called upon the inclusive government to respect its primary responsibility of protecting its citizens through arresting the violence and ensuring that perpetrators of violence and intimidation are brought to book. They further urged SADC and its facilitator President Jacob Zuma to take note of these worrying developments in Zimbabwe and weigh them against claims that the country is ready to hold free and fair elections.
