Keep politics out of schools – Coltart

coltartHARARE Education Minister David Coltart (Pictured) has called on political parties not to turn chools into political playgrounds following reports that Zanu (PF) supporters were going around schools forcing teachers and pupils to give birthday presents to President Robert Mugabe.

I have said consistently that schools should not be political battle grounds, in any form or fashion that is why I put bans on any political party using schools for political rallies,” Coltart said last week Apart from demanding that students pay for birthday gifts for President Mugabe who will be tuning 87 on 21 February, Zanu (PF) supporters have also disrupted lessons by holding rallies at school.

Coltart said: In a nutshell what I can say is that all political parties please stay away from schools, please stop intimidating teachers, and stop disturbing innocent school children, because you are spoiling their future,” Zanu (PF) youths have been going to schools in Harare asking schoolchildren to donate US$1 each for Mugabe’s 87th birthday bash.? Coltart said continued disturbances in the countrys education sector would reverse the gains the country had achieved over the past three decades.
