Mare appeared before Chiredzi magistrate, Enias Magate, facing charges of assault as defined in section 89 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. He appeared on summons and was remanded out of custody to 4 March. Circumstances as presented by the prosecutor Liberty Hove are that some time in January this year Mare attended the funeral of an MDC-T party supporters child in the district.
While at the funeral, a 17-year-old girl started singing the song Nyatsoterera and was joined by the juvenile Michael Tsunguru, a student at Chiredzi Government School and a child of the bereaved family. Mare allegedly stood up and approached the boy from behind and heavily slapped him on the neck.
