MDC Mbare youths still in polie custody

mdc_logoSeven of the nine MDC Mbare district Youth Assembly members who were arrested on trumped up public violence charges on Monday are still in police custody at Mbare Police Station. The other two were released yesterday after paying US$10 fine each for public nuisance. The seven youths are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

They have been denied food and access to treatment for injuries sustained when they were attacked by Zanu PF youths at the MDC offices on Monday. The MDC regrets the abuse of police by Zanu PF, their failure to arrest Zanu PF thugs and being part of the problem of violence that is taking place in Mbare and other parts of the country.

The party dismisses claims by the police national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena that both Zanu PF and the MDC are involved in perpetrating violence in Mbare. Why is it that only MDC members are in police custody when the police claim it was two political camps that clashed?

Meanwhile, the situation in Mbare remained tense and over 20 MDC supporters have fled from their homes in fear of being attacked by the marauding and violent Zanu PF youths. Among those who have gone into hiding are Emma Gwandari, the MDC Women Assembly Mbare district chairperson and Shylet Zuruvi, the Women Assembly district secretary.
