We convinced the police about the need to form teams to follow-up cases involving violence. As a party we remained concerned about police inaction. Any form of violence is a prosecutable criminal offence. For the police to refuse to arrest the perpetrators of political violence cases is nothing short of criminal misconduct on their part, said the partys national spokesperson, Aaron Muzungu.
Violence is violence and law enforcement agents must treat it as such. Muzungu said his party had forwarded names of five-man party teams to work with various police stations in the fight against political violence.
The teams would follow up on reported cases at the police stations, and ensure the police do not develop cold feet regarding investigations and arrests where necessary. We would ensure that each case reaches finality at the courts and justice prevails. As a party, we are fed up with the behaviour of partisan law enforcement agents and it is high time the rule of law was restored, he said.
He indicated that MDC99 has met with top police officers in Marondera. In Harare, they held fruitful meetings with Police Assistant Commissioner Mahachi of Matapi Police Station and Sergeant Ndawana of Harare Central Police. MDC99 anti-violence teams have already started working with the police. Meanwhile, politically-motivated violence, mainly blamed on Zanu (PF), continues to rise in Harares high density suburbs of Mbare and Budiriro, among others.
