The MDC has called for the immediate and unconditional release of human rights activist Munyaradzi Gwisai and 45 others who were arrested on Saturday in Harare on baseless charges of plotting to topple the government of Zimbabwe. Gwisai, a former MP for Highfield, is the general coordinator of International Socialist Organisation (ISO). The arrests are a clear sign that the police are denying the people of Zimbabwe their democratically and constitutional rights of freedom of movement and gathering.
It is inconceivable for the police to assume that a mere 46 people can topple a government by simply viewing old video footage from Tunisia and Egypt. The video material is already in the public domain and can be accessed by anyone from anywhere in the world.
Meanwhile, the MDC led Marondera Town Council is working tirelessly to improve the lives of the residents in the town through innovative, transparent and honest leadership that supports pro-poor service delivery. Marondera mayor, Farai Nyandoro said, the town has excelled in the last two years through the involvement and engagement of its stakeholders in planning and contributing in the development of the town.
We have managed to create a cordial relationship with the stakeholders. The previous council had the top down dictatorial approach which did not include stakeholders, but we have changed that approach to a democratic participatory bottom up approach which involves stakeholders in the affairs of council.
This has inculcated the sense of ownership and belongingness in the residents as we have done away with the shef syndrome in council. Ratepayers are now proudly involved in the affairs of council. We have scheduled monthly meetings within the wards so as to hear the views of the residents and give them feedback on council affairs, Mayor Nyandoro said.
