Truth behind the lyrics

The latest offering by the Mbare Chimurenga Choir has baffled many, what to the lyrics really mean and how has the song been received?

HARARE The song Mahwindi is the choirs most recent release which states:

“VaMugabe vanofamba nemamonya,

Vanofamba nemahwindi.

Kwavanoenda vanoenda nemaRasta.

VaMugabe vanofamba nemaJagger,

Vanofamba nemagweja.

VaMugabe vanofamba nemamonya.

Pavari ivo voga imonya.

Dairai slogan hau.”

While it is true that Mugabe moves around with bouncers (mamonya) or Central Intelligence Officers as they are better known, is it not important to ask why he wants protection from the most violent members of our society?

Considering the how illegal touting is in this country, the song goes on to say that Mugabe moves around with touts (mahwindi), yet the real touts in the city of Harare say they are not in any way aligned to him or his party. Is the song referring to the Chinotimbas, Jabulanis or the Kasukuweres of this world?

I dont know which hwindis those ladies refer to. I hope its not one of my colleagues at the bus terminus. Its Mugabes fault that we are unemployed in the first place, commented one tout, Tinashe Machaka.

The Rastafarian community in Zimbabwe has been outraged by the inference that there are similarities between their laid back culture and Mugabes way of life.

This is an insult to the Rastafarian community, especially considering how violent Zanu (PF). You know how rastas like and cherish peace and so to be associated to violent characters like Uncle Bob is a real insult, said a Rastafarian identified as Rass Mugo.

While the presumption that the illegal diamond miners (magweja) who move around with Mugabe could be Obert Mpofu (Mugabes diamond boy), one also wonders if the spirit of murder that gwejas have is also in Zanu (PF).

During the 2008 disputed Presidential run-off elections, President Mugabe referred to the members of the Mbare womens leagues as prostitutes after Tendai Savanhu of Zanu (PF) lost to Pineal Denga of MDC-T. It is therefore quite confusing that the choir still sings the presidents praises.

Independent political analyst Dr Eddington Maninga said the song shows how desperate Zanu (PF) has become, adding that no serious supporters would allow themselves to be manipulated to such an extent.

“No sane Zimbabwean can ever take that song seriously, this is just one way of showing the amount of desperation Zanu (PF) now has in reclaiming lost pride, but it is rather too late,” said Dr Maninga.

Mugabes praise song mahwindi has been played constantly on the Zanu (PF)-controlled ZBC.
