Bus operators are reportedly refusing to travel the route because of the poor condition of the roads. Rainos Petros, a villager from Nerupiri, said: “There is no bus that services the Nerupiri – Mpandawana – Gutu route. We have to walk about 40km to reach the Masvingo – Mutare main road. We are appealing to transport operators to come to our rescue.”
The villagers also added that private operators were charging exorbitant fares that were beyond their reach. A journey that should cost US$2 is currently costing locals US$5.
The MDC-T legislator for Gutu, Alphas Mukonoweshuro, said he was aware of the problems affecting the villagers and that he was in the process of finding a solution.
