VMCZ statement on licensing of new players

Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) statement on the licensing of a new daily newspaper, a magazine and a foreign news agency office by the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC).

The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) welcomes the granting of operating licenses to one daily newspaper (National Daily), to a magazine (Yellow Pages) and the registration of a local office of the foreign news agency Bloomberg by the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC).

VMCZ applauds the ZMC for this welcome development as the licensing of these newspapers will provide Zimbabweans with increased alternative platforms through which to receive and impart information.

VMCZ is also of the opinion that the licensing of new players in the media will increase employment opportunities for journalists and media workers.

VMCZ however notes that a non-conducive media environment in the country still exists until such a time the inclusive government, parliament and the ZMC actively consider the repealing of repressive media laws such as AIPPA, POSA and the Criminal Law Codification (and Reform) Act.

Furthermore, the VMCZ urges the inclusive government via the yet to be substantially appointed Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe to issue licenses to private and community broadcasters to increase the number of media players in relation to television and radio services in Zimbabwe and that this be done with the active encouragement of the ZMC.
