Water and sanitation investment

ZAKA - A local Non Governmental Organisation, CARE International, in partnership with Delta Beverages has launched a US$200 000 water and sanitation project in Zaka and Gutu districts.

The project will provide communities with access to clean water, sanitation, watershed protection and education awareness. The project, called RAIN, will target 20 schools and their immediate communities over a period of 20 months.

Launching the project at Pasipanyoro Primary School in Zaka district last week, CARE International Country Director, Carol Shawman, said their work complemented the local authority and government’s efforts through the implementation of various developmental and relief programmes.

“CARE is funding a lot of programmes in Gutu and Zaka. Water and Sanitation is one key area that we have funded for the past five years. Our efforts towards attaining the project goal can only be achieved through the strengthening of existing working relationship with key stakeholders. We need to interact more frequently so that we share lessons learnt as we implement this project.”

Shawman said the project’s primary goal was to improve the health and well being of primary and secondary schools in rural Zimbabwe through a comprehensive school-based water, sanitation and hygiene project.

George Mutendadzamera, Delta’s Corporate Affairs Manager, said they were working with CARE International to contribute to the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on water and Sanitation.

“As partners in helping the disadvantaged rural communities, our mission is to serve the poorest communities in our country. Our vision is to seek a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome

and people live in dignity and security,” said Mutendadzamera.

About 10 toilets are already under construction and one borehole has been repaired under the project.
