Army disrupts MDC burial

mdc_symbolMASVINGO - Heavily armed Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) soldiers on Tuesday disrupted the burial of Francis Svosve, the late MDC district chairperson for Chikombezi in Masvingo North who died on Sunday after succumbing to cancer throat.

Svosve died at his rural home in Chikombezi and was buried at the Roman Catholic Gokomere Mission cemetery, some eight kilometres away. According to mourners who attended Svosves burial, two truckloads of soldiers arrived soon after an MDC representative from Masvingo had finished delivering his speech.

We had just finished all the speeches and about to bury our dear cadre when the soldiers in full combat arrived .The soldiers jumped from their trucks and immediately surrounded the cemetery brandishing fire arms as if it was a war situation. It was a nasty situation, said a cousin of the late Svosve, who refused to be named for fear of victimization.

After surrounding the cemetery, one of the soldiers ordered everyone except Svosves close relatives to leave the cemetery.

I am really disappointed at what happened at my uncles burial. If soldiers can come and do whatever at peoples funerals just because they belong to a political party which is not Zanu (PF) then this country really has serious problems, he said.

An MDC activist in the area, Prosper Moyo accused one Henry Chinovava, a well known Zanu (PF) member in the area, of alerting the army about the burial of Svosve.

We have got information that Chinovava is the one who called the soldiers. During the past few weeks, he has been causing havoc in the area. The hardworking spirit which Svosve left in the party will continue to guide us and I know one day the people of Zimbabwe will unshackle themselves from this barbaric regime, said Moyo.
