Govt loots property

BULAWAYO - Cases of government property looting have surfaced at Nkayi District Hospital in Matabeleland North where underpaid workers are allegedly stealing items such as blankets and foodstuffs.

Sources in Nkayi who spoke to The Zimbabwean said the systematic looting at the referral health centre was now making life unbearable for patients, especially pregnant women.

The security at Nkayi hospital leaves a lot to be desired .A donor donated new blankets at the hospital, the blankets are nowhere to be found. Patients at the hospital are using old blankets similar to those used by prisoners, said Joram Dube, MDCs ward 29 chairman.

Dube said he also has evidence that beds are being stolen from the maternity ward, making life difficult for pregnant women.

I know one worker at the hospital who is selling chickens meant for the patients at her home. I have raised this issue with the former MP for the area, Abednico Bhebhe. Action should be taken as soon as possible before the institution is stripped off its critical property, he said.

Bhebhe, who lost his parliamentary seat in the constituency after being expelled from the Welshman Ncube-led MDC two years ago for challenging the partys leadership, confirmed the thefts at the hospital.

This has been happening for a long time. The hospital needs a strong and firm leadership which can immediately stem out corruption at the hospital. Most of the workers are grossly underpaid, said Bhebhe.

Bhebhe, who has maintained a strong presence in the constituency despite losing his seat, attributed the plight of patients at the hospital to lack of a parliamentary representation and alleged that the legislators in the area were abusing the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Efforts to get a comment from the hospital authorities were unsuccessful.
