Married man assaulted

MARONDERA - David Kona, 45, from Rujeko, was recently assaulted by Zanu (PF) thugs, for marrying an MDC-T District Women Assembly member, Mavis Chitswe.

Kona was at Widener Bottle Store on February 28 when five identified Zanu (PF) thugs accused him of marrying an MDC-T activist.

I was having a beer at my favourite night spot when a group of youths approached and accused me of living with an MDC-T sympathiser. They also labelled me an MDC-T intelligence officer who deserved a thorough beating. Before I could grasp what was taking place I was punched and tripped from behind. The thugs assaulted me all over the body as I lay on the ground, said Kona.

He sustained serious bodily injuries and lost US$300, a Nokia E63 cell phone valued at US$320 and spectacles in the scuffle. Following the attack, Kona is struggling to use his swollen right arm and dislocated right leg. He also experiences severe chest pains.

Eye witnesses identified the assailants as retired soldier, Regis Mavhima, Gerald Kuzondishaya of Ruzivo Road, Kassim Minyu and Nyuchi, while the fifth thug could not be identified.

A report was made at Dombotombo Police Station and a docket RRB 1019582 was opened. No arrests have been made as police said they would wait for a medical report to assess injuries sustained. The medical report and X-Ray were forwarded to the law enforcement agents last Friday, but arrests are yet to be effected.

Kuzondishaya was among the Zanu (PF) thugs who attacked MDC-T councillor for ward 4, Caleb Marange, in 2007 at Dombotombo Green Market. Marange sustained a broken leg in the attack.

The recent attack on suspected MDC-T activists in Marondera flies in the face of accusations by Police Commissioner General, Augustine Chihuri that Tsvangirais officials and supporters were perpetrators of political violence currently spreading across the country.
